TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE

Joe Sargent's 1974 gritty crime masterpiece, captivates NYC's dirty underbelly during the hijacking of a subway train full of passengers.
Robert Shaw leads the hijackers in his pre-JAWS performance of understated menace, along with Martin Balsam as the ex-engineer with a beef against the system. Walter Matthau as Insprector Garber, the film's unlikely hero makes the film all the more real. Owen Roizman shoots anamorphic in very low light, an unusual but excellent choice given the aspect ratio's matching shape to the train cars themselves. And David Shire's score is nothing short of brilliant. If you saw Tony Scott's ok remake the thing that suffers most is its lack of Shire's score.

FILM of the Week
RIPPER: The Secret Life of Walter Sickert by Patricia Cornwell.
This is Cornwell's follow up, revision to her earlier work, 2002's Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper -- CASE CLOSED. While both books have been criticized for their conclusions, the Secret Life of Walter Sickert offers a far more convincing case for Cornwell's theory than her earlier work.
I found this book to be compelling and grounded with Cornwell's speculation on Sickert's alter ego to be as close to proven as the world may ever get. Fast-paced, well-written, and thoughtfully presented, the case for Sickert being Jack the Ripper feels undoubtable to me.
Having been exposed to narcissists and those with similar disorders over the years, Sickert's documented behavior does little to dissuade the reader from Cornwell's theory. If he was the Ripper, and I believe this work offers more than substantial proof that he truly did have the last laugh on us all.

UNKLE
I first heard this band in 2000 in a San Rafael gaming shop. Psyence Fiction, their 98 album, remains one of my faves.
Each version of the band has explored richly textured compositions that swing from trip hop to classical and everything in between.
We were lucky to get "The Answer" featuring Big in Japan for DRIVE ANGRY back in 2011.
Look for their remixes of the X-Files theme, The Incredibles and even The Walking Dead to name a few.
